In 2019 Humanity faced multiple challenges, breakthroughs in energy storage and production, CO2 capture and storage, catalysis, and new materials to enable a zero waste economy were needed

Humans did an amazing job creating multiple scientific breakthroughs but superhumans or new research methods were needed to tackle the scale of the environmental challenges being faced

In 2042 R&D is autonomous

Research, Development and Engineering are merged, humans now have full control of materials from atom to working devices
STORAGE
A battery is a very complex system. Depending on the architecture it can have three or four components and they must interact perfectly together to achieve the desired metrics such as specific energy, charge rate or longevity. Because of the limitations of the research and engineering processes in 2019 scientists needed to work on just one component usually falling into the chicken and egg problem, failing to achieve optimal multi component solutions and integration with manufacturing
ENERGY
Fossil fuels outcompeted
In 2042 energy storage systems are carbon negative
New battery chemistries and fuel cells that outperform fossil fuels were created, liquid and gas fuels are still being used but all storage systems are carbon negative due to advances in catalysis
PRODUCTION
In 2019 circa 80% of energy was still being produced with coal and gas, although natural gas power plants emmit 50% less CO₂ than coal, new ways to produce energy were needed. A large amount of resources were being allocated to fusion research but it was still not working. Solar and wind were advancing but energy storage became the bottleneck


ENERGY
MAKE FUSION NOT WAR
In 2042 all electricity comes from renewable sources
Advancements in super conductors and autonomous plasma research enabled net positive fusion, new low cost chemistries for grid storage enabled big solar and wind projects
CARBON CAPTURE
In 2019 100 million tons of CO₂ were being emitted everyday. Carbon credits varied from 35$-100$/tonne but the cost of capture was around 1000$/tonne directly from air and 35$/tonne at source with high energy expenditure and CAPEX caused by expensive contactors. With contemporary technology it was extremelly challenging to make CO₂ capture economically viable and compete with CO₂ sources coming from Natural Gas powerplants. A breakthrough in catalytic systems to make direct capture less expensive and transform CO₂ into high value chemicals. Even with a 100x improvement in capture technology 380 Billion dollars would be needed every year to capture all the CO₂ emmited yearly in 2019

In 2042 the Planet Earth is Carbon Negative
Advancements in Energy production and carbon capture/reduction technology enabled the planet to become carbon negative capturing 100 Billion tonnes of CO₂ per year
CHEMICAL PRODUCTION
In 2019 almost all raw materials for plastics and pharmaceuticals came from fossil carbon sources. Advancements in catalysis were needed to find alternative and sustainable chemical routes

In 2042, ethylene and propylene are still the biggest chemical products by mass, due to the production of plastics and pharmaceuticals.
New catalysts and electrolyzer designs caused a shift to chemicals production by electrochemical CO₂ reduction
CIRCULAR MATERIALS
In 2019 around 8 million tonnes of plastic packaging ended up in the ocean every year killing animals and destroying natural habitats. New materials with programmed and by demand degradation were needed. In 2019 plastics were either too durable or not durable enough and were usually discarded as waste with no associated value
ZERO WASTE ECONOMY
THE RISE OF ZERO
Zero Waste Society
Development of new materials, recycling and upcycling methods enabled decomposition by demand. Materials research and behavior changes enabled clean oceans, 0% of materials end up in the sea
REUSABLE ROCKETS
In 2019 a space industry revival was flourishing. After building reusable rocket boosters, Spacex sent the first astronauts to the International Space Station in a United States built spaceship since 2011 with the Space Shuttle. In 2019 kerosene was still being burned in propulsion systems but methane engines were being developed. Nasa was still using solid rocket boosters with oil derived propellants and liquid hydrogen. 96% of hydrogen production came from fossil fuel sources
SPACE EXPLORATION

There is a permanent station in the moon and Mars, no oil derived fuels are used in space exploration, new materials enabled super low cost space exploration and full reusability
